23 Dietitian-Approved, Travel-Friendly Snacks To Pack in Your Carry-On

Hiking through the mountains, lounging on a beach, or pounding the concrete in a big city- no matter where your vacation takes you, it's important that you fuel up to create awesome memories. That's why today I'm sharing with you some of my favorite travel-friendly snacks to pack along for all the fun adventures. Bon voyage!

* = refrigerate, keep in an insulated lunchbox, or toss after 2 hours

Produce

Of course I recommend enjoying all the yummy foods your destination has to offer, but that doesn't mean I won't tell you to load up on fresh fruits and vegetables, too. After all, they're such an easy way to get in your fiber, vitamins, and minerals which will help you feel your best. The following are great options to pack in your bag because minimum preparation (peeling, washing, slicing) is needed to enjoy them...

  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Bananas
  • Baby carrots*
  • Snap peas*
  • Cucumbers* (I wash and slice these, then toss them in my bag to enjoy on a long car or plane ride).

Protein-Rich 

Add a source of protein to each snack to help you feel full and satisfied until your next meal. The following are easy to pack and enjoy without creating a big mess...

  • Yogurt*
  • String cheese*
  • Nuts and seeds or nut/seed butter
  • Roasted legumes (edamame, broad beans, fava beans)
  • Jerky
  • Protein bars

Energy-Rich

Keep carbohydrate-rich snacks on hand for a quick and tasty source of energy. My favorites include...

  • Popped popcorn
  • Rice cakes
  • Pretzels
  • Crackers
  • Dried cereal
  • Dried fruit

Beverages

Staying hydrated will help you stay cool, regulate your digestion, and help your body flush out toxins. (Once you've made it through security) slip one of these hydrating beverages in your bag... 

Note: caffeine and alcohol are diuretics (in other words, they can dehydrate you) so be sure to drink extra fluids when consuming these. *glug glug glug*
